*Second Session - Ethics Salon: Racism in Canadian Psychology: Exploring the Psychologist's Lens and Experiences (BIPOC therapists)
22 Apr 2021
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
- Thur April 22nd 7:00-8:30pm aimed at BIPOC therapists.
- Facilitator: Dr. Sumin Na
The intention of having separate groups for BIPOC and White psychologists are threefold:
First, the assumption is that the lived experiences in regards to power, privilege, and marginalization are different in these two groups. We believe that it would be more productive to have a focused discussion on systemic racism in the field of psychology and how they are experienced differently in BIPOC and White psychologists.
Second, discussions of race, racism, and systemic racism can elicit discomfort and difficult emotions. By having separate discussions, the intention is to create safety and a level of comfort where these dialogues can be more easily held. With safety in mind, the breakout Zoom groups will be small.
Finally, we are striving to minimize the role BIPOC individuals are often faced with in a White dominant space, such as tokenism and feeling responsible to educate others about race related issues, by having separate discussions.
Registration will close on Wednesday, April 21st at 12 pm. Articles and reflection questions will be sent by end of business on April 21st.
