HISTORY

Since 1938, the BC Psychological Association (BCPA) has represented psychologists in British Columbia. It is a voluntary body and is committed to advancing psychology and the psychological well-being of all British Columbians. Our administrative offices are in Vancouver, BC.

In 1989 the Psychologists Act was amended, and the British Columbia Psychological Association was renamed the College of Psychologists of British Columbia. On January 1, 1993, the College of Psychologists’ sole function became the regulation of the profession of psychology.

The professional interests of psychologists then became the purview of BCPA and a new organization was incorporated under the Society Act using the College’s former name, the British Columbia Psychological Association.

The Health Professions Act was introduced in the mid-1990’s and psychology became a designated profession under the Health Professions Act on January 1, 2000.

BCPA provides professional development and networking activities for members, publishes the BC Psychologist, and operates a province-wide referral service. BCPA seeks to maintain relationships with government with the goal of expanding the role of Registered Psychologists in BC’s health care system and contributing to public policy.

By supporting initiatives such as the Psychologically Healthy Workplace Awards, the BC Psychological Association hopes to promote the value of psychological health and wellness not just in the workplace, but in every aspect of our lives.

MISSION & MANDATES

BCPA provides leadership for the advancement and promotion of the profession and science of psychology in the service of our membership and the people of British Columbia.

The mandate of the British Columbia Psychological Association (BCPA) encompasses several objectives which are spelled out in section two of the Association’s Constitution:

  1. To serve the science and profession of psychology and its applications throughout the Province of British Columbia
  2. To support and stimulate any activity which mutually enhances the interests of the public welfare and of psychologists;
  3. To support and enhance the continuing professional education of psychologists;
  4. To support and advance the interests of the science and profession of psychology throughout the Province of British Columbia.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION & BELONGING

The British Columbia Psychological Association (BCPA) is the provincial home for psychologists in practice, research, and education. As a voluntary professional organization, we are committed to advancing the science and practice of psychology and promoting the psychological well-being of all British Columbians.

We affirm the inherent dignity and worth of every individual. We strive to uphold the rights of all people, regardless of age, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, culture, national origin, religion, language, disability, socioeconomic status, or other marginalized identities. We recognize that these identities often intersect in ways that compound discrimination and inequity.

We acknowledge that provincial, national, and global events continue to threaten the safety, dignity, and human rights of individuals and communities. These events contravene the values we uphold and the ethical principles outlined in the Canadian Code of Ethics for Psychologists, including:

  • Respect for the dignity of persons and peoples
  • Responsible caring
  • Integrity in relationships
  • Responsibility to society

The BCPA stands in solidarity with individuals and communities who face systemic oppression, violence, or discrimination based on who they are or the circumstances of their lives. We are committed to using our platform, privilege, and expertise to advance equity, challenge injustice, and protect the psychological and physical well-being of all people.

This is not a one-time declaration, but an ongoing responsibility. We pledge to continue listening, learning, and acting in service of a more just and inclusive future.
