BC Coroners Service: A Review of Youth and Young Adult Deaths By Suicide in BC

A death-review panel convened by the BC Coroners Service has issued a report that includes recommendations to reduce deaths by suicide and better support young people in British Columbia.
The panel reviewed the deaths of 435 young people in B.C. who died as a result of suicide between Jan. 1, 2019, and Dec. 31, 2023. Suicide is the second most prevalent cause of death among children and youth in B.C., and the third-leading cause of death among adults aged 19-29 years.
Recommendations to reduce youth and young adult suicide in B.C.
- Implement a provincial suicide-risk-reduction framework focused on youth.
- Improve data collection and information sharing to support diverse communities.
- Review school mental health resources to meet the needs of all students.
